At RENIKEJI, each piece is crafted with intention, care, and artistry. To ensure your jewellery remains as beautiful as the day you received it, we’ve created this comprehensive care guide. With proper care, your pieces will continue to tell your story for years to come.
General Care Principles
- Always handle your pieces gently and by the metal parts, not by the gemstones or other delicate elements. Inspect your jewellery periodically for loose stones, worn prongs, or weakened clasps.
- Proper jewellery storage is important for keeping your pieces in great condition. Prevent dents and scratches by keeping them separate from other pieces in your jewellery box. Storing it in its pouch is perfect for this.
- Avoid spraying perfume or applying body lotion directly onto your pieces. It accelerates tarnish, impacts the longevity of your plated pieces, and can be detrimental to softer gems like corals. Put on your jewellery after applying products on your body and remove it first when undressing.
- Salt water and chlorine can cause damage to your pieces; many metals and gems react adversely with them. If you’d like to have them on while swimming, please do this infrequently and rinse them off thoroughly with fresh water. Avoid wearing them when cleaning as the chemicals used might affect them. Refresh the shine of your piece with the provided polishing cloth. Clean dirty pieces with cool water, dish soap, and a soft toothbrush, and polish with the provided polishing cloth.
Brass and Bronze
Brass tarnishes as a result of oxidation in the presence of air, moisture, and acids. We induce a variety of patinas on some of our pieces with this process. If you have had your piece for a while and you’d like to restore its brilliance, you can.
- Remove light tarnish with your polishing cloth
- More sweat means more patina. If this bothers you, take pieces off during strenuous activity.
- Heavily tarnished pieces can be restored at home. Soak your piece in lemon juice for five minutes. Clean with a soft toothbrush and some dish soap. A lemon juice and baking soda paste can work on tough spots. Pat the piece dry with a soft cloth and polish with the provided cloth. Please avoid this procedure for pieces featuring natural pearls and other delicate stones.
- Yes, brass can cause your skin to turn green. It’s nothing to worry about. That’s the copper interacting with the salt of your skin. It washes off quite easily.
- Make sure your pieces are dry before storing them.
Sterling Silver
Silver tarnishes when it comes in contact with sulfur molecules in the atmosphere. Wearing your pieces can slow down the buildup of tarnish as the oils in your skin form a barrier between your piece and the atmosphere. Patina can also be appreciated as a product of you and your piece experiencing time. It is your choice to restore brilliance or not to.
