How to Measure Your Ring Size
Method 1: Visit a Professional Jeweller (Most Accurate)
This is the most reliable method. Visit any local jewellery store in Nigeria and ask them to measure your ring size. This service is typically free and takes just a few minutes. They use professional sizing tools that account for:
- Knuckle size
- Finger shape
- Width of the ring style you want
Why this is best: Your finger shape, knuckle size, and even time of day affect your ring size. A professional can help you get it exactly right.
Method 2: Measure an Existing Ring
If you have a ring that fits well on the intended finger:
What you’ll need:
- A ring that fits the correct finger comfortably
- A ruler with millimeter markings
- Good lighting
Steps:
- Place the ring on a flat surface
- Measure the inside diameter of the ring in millimeters (the straight line across the inside, from edge to edge)
- Use our chart above to find the corresponding size
- Double-check by measuring the circumference if possible
Example: If the inside diameter measures 17.3mm, your size is approximately N (US size 7).
Important notes:
- Make sure the ring you’re measuring fits comfortably on the correct finger
- Measure in millimeters for accuracy
- Different fingers have different sizes—measure for the specific finger
Method 3: String or Paper Method
What you’ll need:
- Thin string, dental floss, or a strip of paper (about 10cm long, 5mm wide)
- A pen or marker
- A ruler with millimeter markings
- Scissors (for paper)
Steps:
- Prepare your material:
- Cut a strip of paper about 10cm long and 5-6mm wide, OR
- Use a piece of string or dental floss about 15cm long
- Wrap around your finger:
- Wrap the string/paper around the base of your finger (where the ring will sit)
- Make sure it’s snug but not too tight—you should be able to slide it over your knuckle comfortably
- The string/paper should be flat against your skin, not twisted
- Mark the overlap:
- Use a pen to mark where the string/paper first overlaps completely
- Make sure you mark both pieces at the same spot
- Measure the length:
- Lay the string/paper flat on a ruler
- Measure from the end to your mark in millimeters
- This is your finger’s circumference
- Find your size:
- Use the circumference column in our chart above to find your size
- If you’re between sizes, round up for comfort
Example: If your circumference measures 53mm, your size is approximately M (US size 6.5).
Method 4: Printable Ring Sizer
You can find printable ring sizers online. Here’s how to use them:
Steps:
- Search for “printable ring sizer” and download a PDF
- CRITICAL: Print at 100% scale (no scaling, no “fit to page”)
- Verify the sizing guide is accurate by measuring the test ruler on the printout
- Cut out the ring sizer following the instructions
- Wrap around your finger and slide through the slot to find your size
Warning: This method is only as accurate as your printer settings. Always verify the scale is correct before trusting the measurement.
Important Sizing Tips
1. Time of Day Matters
Your finger size changes throughout the day:
- Smallest: In the morning and in cold weather
- Largest: In the evening and in hot weather
- Best time to measure: Late afternoon/early evening when fingers are at average size
2. Temperature Affects Size
- Cold weather: Fingers shrink
- Hot weather: Fingers swell
- After exercise: Fingers swell temporarily
- Tip: Measure in a comfortable room temperature
3. Different Fingers, Different Sizes
- Your left and right hands are often different sizes
- Each finger has a different size
- Dominant hand fingers are often slightly larger
- Always measure the specific finger where you’ll wear the ring
4. Knuckle Considerations
Your ring must:
- Fit comfortably at the base of your finger (where it will rest)
- Slide over your knuckle without being too tight
If your knuckle is significantly larger than the base of your finger:
- Measure both the knuckle and the base
- Choose a size that slides over your knuckle but doesn’t spin too much
- Consider adjustable rings or rings with hinged shanks
- Contact us for custom sizing solutions
5. Ring Width Matters
- Wide bands (6mm+): May need to go up half a size
- Thin bands (2-4mm): Standard sizing usually works
- Very thin bands: May go down half a size
Our product descriptions note ring width when relevant.
6. If You’re Between Sizes
General rule:
- Size up if you have larger knuckles
- Size up for wide bands
- Size up if you prefer a looser fit
- Size down for thin bands or if you prefer a snug fit
When in doubt, size up—it’s easier to size down than up.
Special Considerations
For Different Ring Styles
Stackable/Thin Bands:
- Can sometimes run slightly smaller
- May need to go down 1/4 to 1/2 size from your standard size
Wide Statement Rings:
- Cover more of your finger
- Usually need to go up 1/2 to 1 full size from your standard size
Adjustable Rings:
- Typically fit sizes 6-9 (UK sizes L-S)
- Great if you’re unsure or want flexibility
- Check product description for range
Pregnancy and Weight Changes
Your ring size can change due to:
- Pregnancy (fingers often swell)
- Weight gain or loss
- Medical conditions causing swelling
- Arthritis or joint changes
If you’re experiencing temporary changes, consider:
- Waiting until swelling subsides before ordering
- Choosing adjustable styles
- Ordering a slightly larger size temporarily
Ring Resizing Information
Which Rings Can Be Resized?
Usually resizable:
- Plain metal bands (gold, silver)
- Simple solitaire rings
- Designs without intricate details
Difficult or impossible to resize:
- Rings with gemstones all the way around (eternity bands)
- Rings with intricate patterns or engraving around the entire band
- Tension-set rings
- Rings with specific structural designs
Resizing limits:
- Most rings can be sized up or down by 1-2 sizes
- Larger adjustments risk compromising the design
- Very wide bands are harder to resize
